HOLLINGROVE STUD NEWS DECEMBER 2008
FOALS ! FOALS! FOALS !
A great season for us, with eight healthy foals from eight trouble-free births - 3 handsome colts followed by 5 beautiful fillies, surprisingly, all but one were early this year, with 2 catching us completely by surprise and foaling “au naturale” out in the back 10 acre paddock with some mates! Luckily, all was fine-the hardest part being the catching of the proud mums and extricating them from the protective herd!
First to arrive was our first successful embryo transfer-a quality bay colt by Royal Hit from our champion Dream of Glory mare Hollingrove Dreamtime who produced for us a couple of weeks later-a stunning Fidertanz colt- black with lots of chrome-both foals inheriting her world class movement .The later, Flashdance sold at 2 weeks of age to the first client who saw him and recognized his outstanding potential.
Hollingrove Fantine (Flemmingh/Faleten) dominates her foals with her relaxed, friendly nature and super movement and this season's brown His Highness colt is no exception- tall, elegant, upstanding and correct with 3 great paces.
A short break followed with a few, undisturbed sleeps before the filly run started. The first of these is a possibly black by Balou du Rouet (he is by the Brazilian star, Rodrigo Pessoa's Athens Gold Medal winner, Baloubet du Rouet pictured right) The filly is from our showjumping mare and the mother of World Cup showjumper Didgeridoo. ”Babs” is a modern type-tall, elegant and very athletic and compact and of course carries the genes of one of the world's most popular equine stars - "Baloubet"!
Santa Fe - our imported Sandro Hit/Donnerhall mare had us a little worried as she threatened to foal very early. Our fears were put to rest as she ended up hanging on to within 2 weeks of her due date and foaled an exquisite little bay filly, cute as can be, with personality plus. Her chiselled "riding pony head" belying the fact that her dad is the lofty Royal Hit.
Next to arrive, predictably a liver chestnut was another Royal Hit filly- this time mum is the hugely impressive big Don Ramiro/Faleten mare Hollingrove Fallon - and equally predictable is the fact that this year's filly has world class movement, size and presence to become a superstar!
Another early, but eagerly awaited birth was from our maiden Contucci/Aachen mare Hollingrove Contiki by the highly successful De Niro Celle stallion Dancier - we were not disappointed! This filly has all our friends envious-jet black with perfect markings of a narrow blaze and 4 even socks-tall, elegant, beautiful head and with her mother's outstanding movement! It will take “an offer we cannot refuse” to part with this “eye candy”!
Last, and by no means, least, and only a few days old-our Donnerheist mare Hollingrove Chandon gave birth to possibly her best foal to date- a lovely, chestnut with "chrome" Fidertanz filly- tall, elegant and very pretty- a most successful cross!
On the Hollingrove performance horse front- it was great to hear that Hollingrove Fangio (Falsterbo/Fantine) is going so well and thrilled his owner Cathy Cupit with a second placing in a strong 4 YO YH event in Sydney recently - at only his third outing. Also in Sydney, Hollingrove Gemma (Gymnastik Star/Zwion) has commenced an eventing career, showing lots of talent with a 2nd and 5th placing already, as well as wins and placings in dressage.
Hollingrove Brando (Brentano 11/Zwion) will be recommencing his already highly successful dressage career at PSG level this season, his owner/rider Belinda Snooks having taken a short break from riding to give birth to her son Hamish. Hollingrove Winona (Wunder/TB) continues to compete successfully in both the show and dressage ring for her keen owner, Julie Smout.
Congratulations to Cheryl Young of Wangaratta on her recent purchase of the Rotspon gelding Hollingrove Royalty. As breeders, it is very satisfying to sell talented youngsters to such highly successful, experienced dressage riders as Cheryl, and we expect that he will have every chance to become a top competition horse in the future.
Congratulations must also go to Kristie Birse of Ferntree Gully for her astute recognition of the potential of our most exciting colt Hollingrove Flashdance (pictured right) and purchase him at the tender age of 2 weeks. It has been disappointing for other visitors to the stud to be told that he has already been snapped up!
The next edition of Hollingrove News should include, with much excitement, the foaling result of our German Hanoverian Bella Carmina to St Moritz. Plans are for us to take a short visit to Germany once she has foaled, to decide on a stallion to breed her to, prior to her export to Australia. A decision will also be made at this time as to whether to sell, or bring her foal back to Australia.
HOLLINGROVE STUD NEWS AUGUST 2008
Hollingrove Stud is excited and proud to announce our recent purchase of the stunning multi Champion 4yo.mare “Bella Carmina” at the Hanoverian Elite Foal and Broodmare Auction in Verden.
Sired by former Bundeschampion winner “Bellissimo M” , her dam is the illustrious “Carmin Burana”, who in 1998 was crowned “Bundessiegerstute” -the title of German Champion Mare. In 1999 Carmina Burana was 4th at the Bundeschampionat for riding horses in the 4yo.mare and gelding division whilst pregnant to Weltmeyer. The resulting foal “Walk of Fame” ended up in 2nd place at the 2003 Bundeschampionat for 3 yo. riding mares and geldings. In following years Carmina also won the title of “Louis-Wiegels-Schau” and “Ratje-Niebur-Schau”, which together with her title “Bundessiegerstute” made her the most successful mare ever in Hannover. From Carmina's family there are many famous horses, for example “Weltino” with Ellen Schutlen-Baumer.
Bella Carmina (pictured right) herself received outstanding scores at her Mare performance testing, and at the recent Louis-Wiegels-Schau, where she was Champion, she received scores of 10's and 9's. She is currently in foal to the Hanoverian Champion last year in Verden “St Moritz”. She will remain in Germany to foal and travel to Australia in 2009.
HOLLINGROVE STUD NEWS MAY 2008
The first half of 2008 has been quite hectic at Hollingrove- combining property sales and purchases together with the usual busy run-around of getting mares back in foal, foals handled ,weaned and sold to new homes, as well as dealing with an unusually stressful calving season! It has to be admitted though, that with EI cancelling many competitions and riding clinics- weekends became a time when chores around the farm could be caught up with!
Hollingrove Adonis made it to 2 dressage competitions late in the season and had considerable success - an Elementary Championship win at SEDC , upgrading him to Medium, he won at that level a couple of weeks later. Sometimes it is good in the long run to focus on the training rather than the competing aspect of Equestrian sports. Without good basics, progress is not sustainable and therefore, unrewarding.
It is great to see other Hollingrove bred horses out doing very well for their owners, and we are particularly proud of Hollingrove Brando (x Brentano11) Adonis's younger half brother doing incredibly well for his lovely owner Belinda Snooks (see competition page), and look forward to seeing him back on the mainland for the PSG Challenge later in the year.
Hollingrove's turnout/spelling property at Longwarry has been sold, and another property 3 minutes from home has been purchased .
The undulating 103 acres of lush pasture is currently in the process of being re-fenced into large horse safe paddocks for turning out the broodmares and youngsters, as well as being the new home for our Angus cattle. Paddocks there, as well as here at home at Figuna, are currently being prepared for the fast approaching new season of foalings, calvings hay and silage making- a never-ending cycle, it sometimes seems!
Due to us importing mares and also retaining some of the fillies that have been bred at Hollingrove, we have two of our wonderful broodmares for sale. It is a difficult decision, but we know that they will have great homes as they have proven their worth by producing beautiful foals.
Regretfully. it seems that plans for a trip to Germany will be put on hold this year, as the foaling season will be starting earlier than usual. However we are currently negotiating the purchase of an in-foal SPS mare and more details on this will, hopefully appear on our next news update.
HOLLINGROVE STUD NEWS November 2007
Our August trip to Germany proved to be most interesting and informative, despite being rather hectic due to trying to fit so much into such a short space of time! First up, we visited the stallion stations of PSI, Boeckmanns, Sprehe, Klosterhof Medingen, Harli Seifert, Vorwerks and Jens Meyer to view a magnificent array of legendary stallions, as well as "new kids on the block"-still to prove themselves as sires. We are always impressed by the friendliness and openness of the German breeders, and generosity of the time that they are willing to spend with us discussing our mutual passion of warmblood breeding.
We met up with, and became instant friends with the breeders of our imported Sandro Hit mare Santa Fe- the well respected and most successful breeder Kurt Struck and his lovely wife, Ingrid, and we got to meet our mare's mother SPS Dixie, as well as a ½ sister by Hohenstein and her auntie-SPS Daireen- mother of His Highness- and the family resemblance was remarkable!
We had planned our trip around the many fantastic competitions that are held in Germany at this time of year :- World Breeding Championships for Young Dressage and Show Jumping Horses, Hanoverian Young Riding Horse Championships where we got to see our mare's three quarter brother - the licensed stallion Sir Sandro, compete successfully, Herwart Von der Decken-Schau- a Hanoverian Mare Show Championships held once every five years, German Foal Championships at Lienen where we got to cheer on our German breeder friend Bernhard Menke's Londonderry/De Niro colt to a prestigious 6th placing, as well as being literally "blown away" by the magical Champion filly by Fidertanz! We even managed to fit in a couple of extra smaller dressage and show jumping shows- namely a midweek young horse show at Klatte Farm and a large weekend show in the far north at Elmlohe where we were surprised to see many big names competing! In all, we had an exhausting, but great time!
The breeding season at Hollingrove is now well underway with 3 stunning frozen semen colts born. First to arrive was the eagerly awaited Fidertanz/ Santa Fe (Imp)) black/brown foal, and we were certainly not disappointed- he is a super modern type with the same friendly confident nature of his mother's. She is back in foal, this time to Royal Hit for that special Loretta double cross that is currently doing so well in Germany.
Next foal to arrive has been nicknamed "Ryvita" due to his birth interrupting our TV viewing of the horse movie" Seabiscuit". Much to the excitement of young Rebecca, staying with us at the time doing work experience, Chandon obliged by foaling a leggy Rotspon bay colt. (now named Hollingrove Royalty)
Samoa never fails to produce an exceptional foal, and this year's Sunny Boy colt has star quality stamped all over him-definitely one for the foal shows! She will be bred to San Amour this season as the Sandro Hit blood has really proven a winner with her.
We have done a successful embryo transfer with Dreamtime to Royal Hit and she is now in foal to Fidertanz. This is something to look forward to following the bad luck we experienced, with her losing this year's pregnancy.
Fantine is in foal to His Highness (Dec) and her half sister Fallon has been bred to Dancier. Our showjumping mare has been bred to Balou du Rouet. Herlast foal, by Escudo 1, now a yearling filly is looking particularly promising, and we plan to go in a partnership to have her competed and possibly undertake an Embryo Transfer breeding program in the future so that she can stay in training.
Contiki- our Contucci filly is looking sensational and we plan to breed a foal from her. The first, will possibly be to Fidertanz or San Amour and then we will put her back in training for Dressage with the Stars in 2009.

HOLLINGROVE STUD NEWS April 2007
Autumn is now upon us and our many large deciduous trees are beginning to turn yellow and orange with some even a deep red which looks quite spectacular against the soft green carpet of grass that has appeared overnight since the welcome rain has start to fall on the parched paddocks. Much more is needed before we can relax into thinking that we are returning to a normal winter, although I am sure that we are better off the much of rural Australia.
With the 5 mares now safely in foal it is time to start weaning foals, however with this year's 3 babies born over such a spread of time - nearly 5 months-it makes it difficult to plan - probably Surreal and Reggae will be weaned in May and Eve can be left until July as her mother Lippy (Stirling Lip'N'Suck) has not been bred this season, but will go to stud next October. All foals have been well handled, halter broken and their feet trimmed, so weaning time should not be a drama.
It was super to see Alison Crombie out competing at the recent Victorian AWHA Gala Day with Hollingrove Dreamtime's half sister Hollingrove Reflection (Rotspon x S.Mirage) ... pictured left.
(Picture Berni Saunders, www.
Ruby looked magnificent, behaved herself beautifully and did us proud, by coming a close 3rd behind 2 imported State Premium Hanoverian mares.
We received great news from our clients from WA, Kate Barton and her partner Ben. Kate said that the 2 fillies that they purchased from us, Sasha and Sunburst have swept all before them.
I have included this excerpt from Kate's email ...
" Ben and I just wanted to let you know that we have been having huge success with our beautiful babies. Sunburst has won Supreme Champion Warmblood all ages at three breed shows in a row now. She also won Champion Mare or filly at the annual AWHA Show today! Sasha won Supreme Hanoverian at the AWHA Show and beat some really top horses inc. a jet black Don Frederico 3yo.stallion (Supreme of Supremes AWHA)
Both fillies have the most amazing temperaments! Sunburst is so relaxed she will just about fall asleep in the line up if allowed and Sasha has that typical Sandro Hit "look at me" flair. They are so enjoyable to work with and don't have a nasty bone in their bodies. Thank you again for allowing us to purchase such amazing horses-they have both truly exceeded all my expectations " Kind Regards...Kate
Kate and Ben, together with some partners have recently imported the black, licensed Oldenburger stallion, Royal Oak 11 (Royal Olymp x Welt Hit11) and we wish them all the best in their breeding venture - he should prove a lovely cross with their fillies.
We also recently received an update on the progress of Hollingrove China Doll from her new owners Emma and Alistair :-
"China is now about 15.2-3hh and a beautiful bodied horse. We have mouthed her a little for in hand training and even sat on her bare back in the arena. Nothing fazes this filly - she takes everything in her stride!
We plan to break her in at the end of the year, then work her lightly in 2008."
